Amanda Tuohy-Fuller is Associate Artistic Director of the Indiana Ballet Theatre NW (IBT). Amanda is a Certified Dance Educator through the Chicago National Association of Dance Masters (CNADM), achieved Honors level certification at the professional level of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance (ISTD, Checcetti-based).

She attended Columbia College Chicago for her Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance Performance and Choreography, attained a Bachelor’s degree from Purdue University, and a Master’s degree from Valparaiso University. She currently attends a graduate program at Columbia College Chicago for Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT), within the Department of Expressive Arts Therapies, and is President of MOVED. She intends to bring DMT, an “empirically supported premise that the body, mind and spirit are interconnected, and psycho-therapeutic use of movement to further the emotional, cognitive, physical and social integration” (of the individual) to NWI, in hopes to better serve the population (ADTA, 2015). Amanda intends to attain her GLCMA from Columbia College next year, further enhancing her ability as a movement analyst.

Besides engaging in mindfulness practices through movement, Amanda trained extensively in dance and dance education. She began at Imperial Dance Studio/IBT (ISTD) and CNADM before attending Columbia College, Ruth Page, Lou Conte, and Joseph Holmes Dance Theater, among many others. She has trained with National and International Dance Masters from around America and Europe. Amanda performed with Perceptual Motion Chicago, IBT, Pas de Cinq, Columbia College, JJ Brooks Show, NWI Symphony, and LaPorte County Symphony. Amanda has performed in many modern companies and industrials, such as Around the Coyote. Principle roles have included Snow Queen in “Nutcracker”, Cinderella, Lilac Fairy, Odile; and in Cabaret, Grease, Chicago and Chakra Dance. Choreography and teaching has spanned NW Indiana and the Chicago area, Northwestern University, Danceology, V.I.P Bachelorette, Summer Theaters and Intensives, specialty programs as well as at IBT. She excels at private coaching and movement analysis for enhanced functioning, and has choreographed for professional performances, competition, variety shows, high school musicals, and industrials.

Her 37 years of dance training thus far includes Classical Ballet, Tap, Modern, Contemporary, Jazz, Pointe, Partnering, Character, with movement experiences in styles and forms such as Irish dance, contemporary hip-hop, Pilates, yoga, Flamenco, and Bollywood. Historically, she has trained with Larry Long, Delores Lipinski Long, Anna Paskevska, Jan Eckert, Ginger Farley, Edward Villella, Gelsey Kirkland, Robert Mills, Richard Woodbury, Bruce Stegman, Jimmy Payne Jr, Frank Hatchett, Gus Giordano, Terrell Paulk, Greg Begley, Tom Ralabate, Brenda Buffalino, and many more. In college, Amanda performed in Faculty and Student Concerts, instructed by dancers from companies such as; Alvin Ailey, Joseph Holmes, Limon, Merce Cunningham, Martha Graham, Hubbard Street, and others.

Currently, she studies and practices dance pedagogy as her area of primary interest to better serve the IBT student population, focusing on group classes and private coaching for the serious or professionally-minded dancer. Also engaged in dance-making studies, Amanda incorporates Bartenieff fundamentals and Laban language in her teaching, and will complete the Graduate Laban Certificate of Movement Analysis (GLCMA) after her DMT. Amanda is engaged in ongoing studies into the Revolutionary Principles of Movement (RPM) as applied to many dance forms and diverse bodies for ballet, highlighting ballet and modern dance. She currently has started a new dance internship program for local area high school students of IBT that are moving towards a college education in dance. Guiding dancers to learn classical and contemporary repertory has become a focus, as she sends IBT students to the Youth American Grand Prix, auditions for college programs and intensives, with students attaining NW Indiana Youth Arts award in dance, and the FAME Chicago scholarship.

History with IBT includes: The Nutcracker, Peter Pan (original production), Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Coppelia, Gaite Pariesienne, Swan Lake, Thumbelina, Kaleidoscope, Standing Room Only, Firebird and tours to Disney World, France, Germany, England, Italy, Cancun and Cozumel Mexico, and cruise ships. She has taught foundation classes for the Academy utilizing ISTD techniques and other dance styles and forms within the elementary and professional prep divisions, including Tap, Jazz, Modern, Partnering and Pointe for IBT. Currently, she exclusively teaches and choreographs for the IBT Company, often promoting dancers by involving the Company in dance choreographic showcases such as Dance Chicago, and Rebound Dance collaborative. She directs and produces the annual modern/contemporary showcase Kaleidoscope, and the jazz/contemporary showcase Standing Room Only. Amanda often collaborates with IUN’s dance director, inviting their students to participate in Kaleidoscope on many occasions.
